Travis Heights is located just south of the river and north of Ben White Blvd. You want to walk through the tree lined neighborhood to the festivities on SoCo. "First Thursday" is a favorite of mine. Lots of local vendors converge up and down Congress Avenue selling everything from leather to beads and jewelry to neat little canned jellies and jams. Nothing is just average, this is Austin "weird."
This area was started by Colonel Travis (of Alamo fame.) Lots and lots of beautiful OLD homes, many of them historical, adorn these streets. You could also find a century old house right next door to an ultra modern architecturally designed green home.
Neighborhood activism and individuality is par for the course in this part of town. Lots of individuality is common. One of the houses in particiular caught my eye because it has a bust of Elvis on the roof of the big front porch. How individual is that?
I love going to Stacy Park. It's old and big and so beautiful. A creek runs through it and it's just a great place to chill out from the hustle and bustle and ground yourself. Picnic tables are all over it. Austin amazes me that it can be such a forward city, especially with all of the lofts and high rises going up downtown, yet so many parks to relax in. There is also a warm springs pool to enjoy here.
Travis Heights is known for its many and varied restaurants. There's something to please everyone here. You can shop for everything from boots to clothing to gourmet food here. It's a great place to shop and live.
